Back to the US

About 5 years ago, I wrote that we had moved to Leeds, UK. Now we moved back again and are settling into Eugene, Oregon.

The short story on “why” is that I continue to work for Mozilla, and while they are exceptional when it comes to building a process and culture that enables remote employees to contribute effectively, I was finding it increasingly hard to engage and feel a part of the team. The occassional late meetings weren’t so bad taken in isolation and I mostly just logged in briefly after dinner to check-in on things, but when I thought about living this way for the next 10 or 20 years it got depressing.

Now that I’m in the pacific time-zone I find a remarkable thing has happened: I finish work and go home at dinner time. I may not actually be more productive, but I worry less.

And why Eugene? Well, its not the bay area and its still in the right timezone. Its quite beautiful, semi-affordable and lots of fun stuff going on. I think we’re going to like it here.
